UNITED CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The North Canterbury United Charitablo Aid. Board met yesterday. Present—"Mr F. Horrell (chairman. Mr C. Allison (Mayor), tho Rev. W. 3. L. Gloss, fyessrs J. Davison, C. Cook, Palmer, D. McMillan/ W. \V. Tanner, T. D.' Boag, J. "Wolfe, H. B. Sorensen, "Snencer, Moore, Henderson, Mrs Cunnington, Mrs Wilson, and Mrs Ensom. .... ■ . , -:., - The report of Mr Tanner (chairman of the Hospital -Committee) stated, inter alia, that the - accommodation for patients had been -severely taxed, and owing to an unusual number of cases of diphtheria and typhoid an old out-oatient -ward has ■ been brought into uso again for the. former cases. , ■' As the outcome of the report, the Hospital Committee was instructed to advertise for three physicians, threo surgeons, two ophthalmists, one pathologist, one. onasthetist. one radiologist for the honorary staff of-tbo hospital. In regard to delirium tremens patients, Mr Tanner moved, and it was agreed that no patients in this condition he admitted* to the Hospital. Mr Allison stated that Mr Bishop, S.M., was willing to commit such patient*, to Sunnyside. In "regard to a clause referring to further accommodation for tlie nursing staff, tho chairman said the domestics were very badly housed, and new dormitories were absolutely needed. New kitchen accommodation must also be provided. They must also make., a start shortly with their administrative block, store's, etc. The sooner the old buildings were done nway with, the better for all concerned. Mr Tanner moved, and Mr Clossseconded, tliat tho Hospital Committer be empowered to call for designs and estimates for tho enlargement of the nurses' home and tho erection of -i new administrative block between tho en-gino-houso aud the morgue. Mr Allison moved, ond Mr Ccoh seconded, as an amendment, that tho Hospital Committee bo asked to report what extra buildings it is desirable to erect during the current financial year, and what "course it recommends the Board to take to provide the buildings required at the Hospital. On a division the amendment was lost by 10 votes to 6, and the motion was carried. Tho rer-ort as Amended was adopted. Mrs Wilson proposed that the nurse in charge at the Sanatorium should rank as matron of that institution. Tlie matter was referred to tbe Hospital Committee to consider the advisability of adopting this course, and to define the relative positions of that officer and the matron of the Hospital. The Finance Committee submitted a schedule of duties of * the Hospital steward, and recommended that the salary he £100, with board and residence, and tliat tho Board tako str.p*> with as little delay as possible to provide suitable office accommodation in the Hospital promises. Tho report was adopted, and it was decided that the present steward should receive notice that his engagement would terminate on June 30th, and that applications for tlie position be invited, the present steward to be .ligibie for reappointment. The Medical Superintendent's report stated that during April, 135 patients were admitted to the Hospital, 110 patients were discharged, and 18 ]iatients died. There were 126 operations performed under an.esth_tics. There wore 198 out-patients' tickets issued—this being the number of new applicants for April—and there were CGI attendances in the casualty department, and 331 attendances in the medical and ophthalmic out-patient department. There were 14 cases of scurlet fever admitted to Bottle. Lake Hospital during the month, and one death. On April 30th thero wire 131 patients remaining in the wards in Christchurch Hospital. Tlie report was adopted.
