FIRES.

A HOUSE DESTROYED.

Shortly after four o'clock on Saturday morning a firo was discovered in an houso on Stanmorc road, Linwood, occupied by Mrs Knudson. An alarm was raised and two chemicals (motor and horse) with fourteen men, in charge of Superintendent Erck, were promptly on tho scene, but the conflagration had obtained so firm a hold that the efforts of the fire-fighters were futile, ami the house and its contout.; , were totally destroyed. The houso was a very old one, and was in th-j hands of tho Public Trust office. It is thought the outbreak originated through a defective chimney in tho kitchen. The building was insured for £100 in the United office, and the furniture for £300 in the same office.

An incipient fire was discovered in tho Amuri Tea Rooms in Hereford street. about a quarter to eleven on Saturday morning. A motor chemical was despatched, and the firemen found smoke issuing from tho casement into Mr Hopkins's office below. An investigation showed that the flooring under a gas stove in the Amuri Tea Rooms had caught fire, the smoke making its way into the room underneath. The fittings and furniture in the tea rooms, of which Miss A. McGregor is proprietress, are insured for £100 in the United office. Very little damage was done by the conflagration.

About 2.30 a.m. yesterday Constable Nugent, while on duty in Antigua Htreet, discovered a fire in on unoccupied four-roomed wooden house situated in Halkett Street, a small 'jlind lano running off Antigua street, between St. Asaph street and Moorhouse avenue Ho immediately informed the brigade, but the building was consider, ably damaged before tho outbreak was suppressed. The fire started in the front of tho house, but tho origin is unknown. The house was owned by ■Mrs Emily Dalton, of Duuedin, but the insurance could not be ascertained.
