NEW ZEALAND FROZEN MEAT
ITS DISTRIBUTION AT HOME.
The recent frozen meat conferenoe and the distributing of New Zealand frozen meat after it arrives at Home, ■were referred to at the meeting of the North Canterbury Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union yesterday afternoon by Mr C. H. Ensor. He quoted from a published account of experiences of a young New Zealander, who, when in the Old Country recently, endeavoured to get New Zealand meat, but found that the best people were using it under another name. Mr Ensor also quoted a recent cablegram relative to the account given by £he "Daily Chronicle's" New York correspondent of the enormous amount of food stuffs held in stores by trusts, and that correspondent's statement that the high price of food was not due to scarcity. Mr Ensor said that it was more than probable that there was a good deal of New Zealand meat in the "corner," and that those who engineered it were making more than the producer here was getting. He then quoted the cablegram reporting the prosecution of American firms, including Armours and Swifts, on charges of combining to unduly enhance the price of mtat, and stated that the firms mentioned by name urere operating in London, and probably their agents were operating in New Zealand. Farmers should keep in mind the fact that they were being exploited by people at the other end, and that though they were growing good stuff here, they were doing nothing to put it properly before the public at Home, and were letting themselves be exploited. Mr Ensor further quoted the cablegram .regarding women's riots in New York having led to the dosing of 100 butchers' shops, the women's indignation being due to the statement that double prices would be charged for Australian and New Zealand frozen meat imported via England. He said it was more than possible that someone at the other end was getting double what the farmers here were getting. The producer was landing meat at Home ready for consumption at 4d pf?r lb, and it was being sold there at 10d and Is per lb. A good deal could "be done by farmers to improve the distribution of the meat at Home.
