The Federal-Houtdcr-Shiro Lino steamer Cornwall is duo here on Saturday froai Timaru to completo loading it, full cargo of meat and other products for West of England ports. The steamer is to leave Lyttelton about Tuesday next for Avonmouth via Monte Video. The new steamer which is being built for the Siiire Line will be named Argyllshire. She is being built by Messrs John Brown end Co., of Clydebaiik, and will be 500 feet in length, with a capacity of 14,000 tone. She is being designed for tho requirements of the Australian and New Zealand trade, And when completed will be one of the finest vessels of her class afloat. It is reported that the owners of the Shire Line arc negotiating for the construction of two additional vessels. The big French barque Jacques, which arrived in the stream on Tuesday evening from Wellington, was berthed at the Gladstone pier. She is a. handsome vessel; typical of the big French "windjammer," and with her lofty masts and long yards made an imposing appearance. The Jacques is the firet French barque 1o visit Lytielton since the unlucky Boieldieu put in h&re over five and a half years ago with a broken rudder, and sho ia also the largest sailing chin to come here since the enforced visit of "that ship. Tie Spithead, which attracted some attention by reason of the somewhat unusual arrangement of her deck houses, will Bail to-morrow for Dunedin to finish discharging. Shipping people had a, busy day at Lyttelton yesterday, when there was a big fleet of veosela in port. The Kia Ore and tho barque Jacques berthed during the morning, and the arrivals included the Canopus, Kairaki, Monowai, Mararoa, Hauroto, Spit-head, and Ennerdale, while the Cysmet and Holmdale came in last night. Tho flags of three nations were flying in. port, Austria end France c«ch having a representative among the fleet of twelve vessels at tho. wharves. The well-known vessel Lutterwortb which, after being dismasted off Cape Campbell two or three winters ago, was purchased by the Union Company end dismantled, io now beine fitted out at Wellington for use as a coal hulk. The Wootton arrived at Kaiapoi on Tuesday morning early, with sheep from Kaikoura, and sailed in the afternoon for Foxton
