The first meeting of creditors > f Edward. Alfred Chapman, of Christchurch, furniture maker an<l dealer, was held yesterday. Chapman, ivho is supposed to have- left New Zealand, -was adjudged a bankrupt on the petition of ono of the. creditors, were, several creditors present at <±c meeting yesterday, but no appearance of the debtor. The Assignee stated that he aad had the stock collected and valued, and a statement nreoared from the information ■ available. The unsecured creditors' claims amounted to £740 19s od. There was a secured creditor of £300, but the estimated value of the security was only £800. The stock-in-trade was valued at £397 19s Sd. and the book debts, amounting to £265, were estimated to produce £100. With cash in hand, £8 13s, the total assets were £306 13s Sd. Mr "W. Goss said ho understood the bankrupt had left for England, and no advantage would bo gained in bringing him back. He would move that the estate bo left in the hands of the Assignee, and Hing, Harris and Co., the largest creditors, to realise to the best advantage, and as early as. possible. Mr Goss added that the book debts would have to be tested, for lie understood the bankrupt, before leaving, had collected as many as ho could, and it mislit bo found that many of the book debts included in the statement had been paid. The motion was seconded by Mr Gapes and carried. The principal creditors were:—G. Mitchell £195. Bing, Harris and Co. £112 18s lid, A. W. and F. C. Brailsford £47 18s 3d, G. Taylor and Co. £43 15s 4d, W. Gdse £41 6s Id, Maddren Bros. £40 12s 3d, J. A. Fothorgill £28 Is 2d, "Lyttclton Times" Co. £21 0s 6d, Simmonds* £20, Gill Bros. £27 Is 4d. A. Tyree and Co. £15, H. Fewings £12 14s lOd, E. Ellis and Co. £10 6s 9d, G. Woolley £11 16s 4d. The secured creditor was A. Wildey, printer.
