TARIFF REFORM UNPALATABLE.
(Received January 31st, 10 p.m.) LONDON, January 31. The "Spectator," summing up the election situation, says that only their nominal adherence to the policy of the free exchange of commodities saved the Liberals from destruction. If the Tariff Reformers had abandoned the idea, of taxing bread, meat, and cheese, and had asked only for taxation upon, manufactured articles other than those consumed as food, the Liberals would have been heavily defeated. "While depriving i the Government of the power to do any of the things it desired, the electors were unwilling to give a victory to Tariff Reform.
The same journal anticipates the adoption of the Budget after Nationalist attempts to reduce the whisky *ax. It suggests a compromise with the Lords by a Bill declaring the Lords' inability to reject pure money bills, and prescribing non-interference with finance Bills operating for one year.
