PORT OF TIMARU.
A SPLENDID RECORD
tfWUtSB ASSOCIATION TELEOBAH >
TIMARU, January 28. At a meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board to-day, the chairman (Mr J. Craigie, M.P.) said the trade and revenue returns of the port disclosed a very satisfactory state of affairs. The increase in revenue for 1909, over that of 1908, was £3355, and adding the increase in the harbour rate (£400), there was a total increase of £3755. This spoke well for Timaru harbour and l district. The increase in the value of the lroports and exnorts for 1909 over that of 1303 -was £268,023, and the increase ni tons of imports and exports totalled 10,272. The value of the foreign and intercolonial import , ; and • exports ior 1909 was £1.48-3,338, and the coastwise £7(k>,440, making a total of £2,250,778. He questioned whether another district in the Dominion of a similar size could show such a record of produce grown a-ii shipped away in the" one year. In the matter of imports, there had been a decrease of 9390 tons, while in exports tberu was an increase of 25,671 tons. Tlkso returns were made up to January 5ll» of this year. Had they been mr.de four hours later, they would have shown to still better advantage, as they would have included another 2112 tons taken by the Delphic and the Tongariro. The former had taken 7225 bales of wool—a record in one bottom to go from Timaru. Timaru still held the position of third port in the Dominion for exports of frozen mutton. It was gratifying, also, to know that butter was now being graded and shipped here.
