CASUALTIES.

FOUND DEAD.

On Monday morning a young man named James Johnstone, eighteen years of age, ason of Mr Christopher John?Jf" c -x and l . IJ k the e ™pl«y of Mr D. G. Wright, of Surrey Hills, near Mount bomers, went out shepherding, and as he did not return in the evening a search party was sent out and found a horse without a rider about four miles from the homestead. Johnstone was subsequently found dead on a small hill with his neck broken. No cause can be aa »g°fd for the fatality unless the horse stumbled and threw Johnstone, who was a steady young fellow and conversant with the country. There is no suspicion of foul play.

A narrow escape from drowning occurred in the .vaiau river last Sunday when three visitors to the Cheviot races were returning to Kaikoura. The river was in flood, and the three men tackled the stream in a gig without signalling for the ferryman. The consequence was they soon got into difficulties, the gig was upset and' all thre© persons went down stream for close on a quarter of a mile before Harry Leaman, the ferryman, succeeded in effecting a rescue. As it was, the visitors lost all their belongings, including the seat of the gig.
