THE HOLIDAY.
Ideal weather favoured the holidaymakers on New Year's Day, and there was a very large exodus from the city in various directions. The trams to Wainoni Park, New Brighton, and Sumner were crowded, the weather tempting, a great number of people to the seaside resorts. The trotting meeting at Plumpton Park attracted a large gathering, and the race trams were extensively patronised. A goodly number journeyed to Rangiora, where an attractive sports programme had been provided. The Lyttelton Regatta was l also well patronised, tho-ucdi not to such an extent as have been anticipated from the fineness of the weather. Doubtless the crush on the trains, and the somewhat unpleasant atmosphere of the tunnel on a hot summer's day, kept many from making the trip. At Waikari the North Canterbury Caledonian Society held a very successful gathering of the clans. Piping. Highland dancing, etc., provided plenty of amusement for the large gathering assembled. At Wainoni Park there was a great assemblage, and the various side shows were liberally patronised. In the evening all the different places of amusement had holiday audiences. The only fixtures to-day .ire the Plumpton Park Trotting Club Meeting at Plumpton Park and the Bell Wheel Race Meeting at Lancaster Park.
