SCHOONER HUIA ON FIRE.
The Marine Department has been advised by the Collector of Customs at Kaipara that on Friday last, 24th inst., a fir© broke out on board the auxiliary-screw schooner Huia at Tekopuru. The fire started amongst some sails stowed under the cabin and spread to the deck and the beams in the after part of tho hold, which were a. good deal charred, but beyond this, the damage was not extensive. It is understood that it took several hours to get tho fire out. It is probable that either the Coroner will hold an enquiry or the Collector of Customs will make a. preliminary enquiry and the evidence will be forwarded to the Marine Department. The Huia is one of the beet-known coastal traders and ia a larg topsail schooner of 198 tons register. She has en auxiliary-screw driven by a gasoline ensrfne. she is commanded byCaptain D. McKenzie, and trades regularly between Lyttelton and Kaipara. On her last trip she left Lyttelton on December 16th.
