LABOUR TROUBLES.

(PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGKAM.) WELLINGTON, December 22. Rumours are current in Wellington of trouble in the slaughtering trade. Up to the present the slaughtermen have been working under an industrial agreement made in June, 1906, and formally terminating in Juno last. The rate of pay under this agreement is 23s per 100 sheep or lambs. On the expiry of the agreement the union, it is understood', asked for an increase to 25s per 100. Negotiations followed, and it is understood that informal conferences were held, but the employers were firm in stating that they could not see their way to grant the increase asked for. (special to "the press.") DUNEDIN, December 22. Shearers engaged on the Walter Peak station, Lake Wakatipu; have gone out on strike, after shearing 5000 out of a total of 14,000 sheep. The men were receiving the award rate of 18s per 100. biut on reaching the stage mentioned, demanded that they be paid 20s per 100. This the owners refused. The shearers' award contains strike clauses.
