Cfrom orr. own correspondent.) [ LONDON, November 1-. ' The Hon. W. Ha!J-Jones continues to < make good progress towards recovery ( from his recent heart- attack. He was i able yesterday to leave his bod for a < few hours, but will not, even under 1 the best circumstances, venture out of •' the iiouso for some time yet. Mr G. E. Butler, the well-known , Wellington artist, who is hoav residing i.'i 15ristol, is at present engaged in < painting a historic picture on cominis- ■ j-ion for the Corporation of Bristol. Two other artists : who arc well known in New Zealand j : have recently been made members of the Royal Society of British Artists, namely, Mr C. N. Worsley and Mr E. W. Christmas. Both arc in England at present, and they have tour paintings on the exhibition of t'ne Society. New Zealand is represented by only one artist at the New Gallery Exhibition of Portrait Painters, opened this week. Miss Grace Joel lias a life-size ro:%rait of a little girl two years of une. A farmer student of Canterbury Collego, Mr L. H. Harrison, M.Sc, was until last July living in Manchester, first as a student at the local University, and latterly as private assistant in tho University to Professor Dixon, head of the Chemical School at that institution. Mr Harrison resigned that position in the summer with the object of unending some little time in the Continental Uniw;\>ities. At present he is working with Professor Lorenz, Professor of Electro-chemistry at the Zurich Polyteohnikum, In German Switzerland. He tolls m« that tho laboratories there are splendidly fitted up, and that every facility is given for the conduct of original work. While conducting ' work with Professor Lorenz, t'he New Zealand student hfs boon admitted to the University at Zurich, and has the opportunity of working with Werner in chemistry and with Gruhenmann. in mineralogy. That the number of New Zealand visitors to London is growing less is shown by the few names which have been left this week at the office of the New Zealand Government, viz.: —Dr. H. K. Allison (Christchurch), Mr J. Muir (Thames). Mrs McDonnell (Auckland), Mrs E. li. Stephens (Southland), and Mr E. W. Beaglehole (Wellinrtcn), who has lately como over from Jena, Germany. Mr Will Brooke, who has been for some time first officer of the Star of Australia, 'has now been promoted to the command of the Star of England. The popular autnor of "Tho Log of a S.iikirman" and "Over the Brave Blue Seas" is not likely to be seen in Australasia ago in for some Aime, as the Star of England will, in all probability, inaugurate a new meat-carrying service from Venezuela to England. Before entering on his new command, Mr Brooke will no through his gimnecv course in connection with the Royal Naval in which he holds t'he rank of lieutenant.
