At a practice meeting of the Rangiora Fire Brigade, a trial of a new- method of heating the water in the steam fire engine was mad*. The brigade had hitherto to get up steam from cold water, and the new method is expected to save not less
than three minutes. The idfea is on the principle of the circulating tube in the not water system, and when ■v v a PP aratus is completed, it will be fitted with s-lf-acting appliances for shutting off the gas jet. The idea ~as the . suggestion of Fireman T. 1 hom.pson, who made a model to demonstrate the working.
