THE VOLUNTEERS.

The Malvern Mounted Rifles and Ellesmere Mounted Rifles have been in camp at Norwood during the past week, under Major Deans. The following officers were also in camp:—Captain D. McMillan, Lieuts. Hutchinson, Holmes and Pole (Malyern Mounted Rifles), and Captain Neave, Liouts. Hammond and Penlyton (Ellesmere Mounted Rifles). The following camp appointments were made: —Lieut. Pole to bo adjutant, Sergeant-Major Cullen to bo regimental sergeant-major, Q.M.S. Millar to be regimental quartermastersergeant, Sergeant Trumpeter Gordon to be regimental sergeant trumpeter. There is an excellent muster in camp, and a lot of useful work is being done over the surrounding country. On Sunday Divine eervice was attended at the Presbyterian Church, Dunsendel, when a stirring military sermon was preached. Morning dismounted parades have been held, and the result is a fine setting up of the men, who are all of an excellent stamp. Mounted work of all classes has been taken under the instruction of Staff SergeantMajor F. Wood, who has also delivered evening lectures. During the week the squadrons were inspected by Lieut.Colonel Hawkins, Officer Commanding the Canterbury District.

The members of No. 1 Company Garrison Artillery Volunteers (Lyttelton Navals), who arc in camp at Fort Jervois, Ripa Island, are making excellent progress with their work, which is carried out during the evenings and in the early morning, the majority of the men having to come across to Lyttelton every morning to their civilian work. The searchlight is kept running every night to show up the towed targets, which greatly assists the work of night fortrmanning. Captain Richardson, Chief Instructor of Artillery, paid a visit to the camp to give his usual instruction to the men, preparatory to his coming into the camp to superintend the annual class-firing. Practically every morning and evening next week will be devoted to the shooting with the heavy Bin and 6in guns and the quickfirers. Colonel Cooper, Officer Commanding Canterbury.Division Garrison Artillery Volunteers, is in camp at Fort Jervois.
