TEACHERS' PASSES.
FURTHER APPLICATION TO GOVERNMENT.
The subject of railway concessions for teachers was dealt with in a report from the Normal School Committee presented to the Education Board yesterday. v The committee stated that a report was received from the. inspectors on the Department's proposal that freepasses should be issued to teachers in •connection with special sessions such as summer and winter schools. The report, while recognising that a sho>t course of instruction had something to recommend it, pointed out that many o* ■ the essential experiments in agriculture would require a much longer time- for their completion, and that the actual cost of carrying teachers to and. from the classes on 'alternate Saturdays extending over the school year would not be much greater than the expenses involved in a short continuous course, seeing that most of the teachers using the passes would return to their homes at the close of each day's work. it was agreed to inform the Department of the purport of the inspectors' report, aTid to press for a reply to-the Boards application for re-consideratijn of the decision to discontinue fre* passes. Mr Hardy and Mr LangforJ were requested to represent the Board and join the deputation from the Wellington Board, which had arranged t<» wait on the Minister on November 2oth. Mr H. Langford, one of the deputation which waited on the Government in the matter, said Be had reason to believe the free passes would be retained, but there would be stricter conditions and closer supervision. Mr Opie said that from what he had heard he did not think it likely that the concessions would be continued.
