CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

MEETING OF BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

The monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the Canterbury College was held yesterday afternoon. Prosent:—Mr G. W. Russell, M.P. (chairman), Bishop Julius, Dr. Talbot, Messrs J. L. Sc Qtt > Ronnie, J. C. Adams, L. B. Wood, T. \V. xvo-we, G. T. Weston, W. H. Montgomery, W. Izard, and T. Hughes. Leave of absence was granted to Bishop Grimes, Messrs Foster and Opie. The Chairman said that in regard to the finances of the Pubhe Library, the • Librarian reported that'on the 12th October there were 2457 subscribers. A return in regard to the Juvenile Departmentjahowed that 347 juveniles had taken out tickets showing a very gratifying interest among the young people. Up to date the subscriptions received amounted to £728 7e, the amount for the corresponding period of last- year being i~7[!Q. In view of the drastic alteration that had been made in the subscription, the result was extremely gratifying. . The Chairman referred briefly to the work in connection with the collection of early colonists' records. Very great public interest had boon taken in the matter, and the Board had voted £50 for the purposes of the Association. However, some of the proposals made by a sub-committee indicated an intention to go into a larger expenditure than the Board contemplated. One Rii <T<, estion was that a shorthand reporfer should be employed to interview early colonists, and get viva voce records of their early experiences, with a view of these being placed in the Museum. The Board of Governors had no'- the funds available for work of that kind. The Board might suggest that the committee could raise a public fund •for the purpose of forwarding the object in view. He moved, "That the Early Colonists' Committee be requested to consider the advisability of organising a public fund for the assistance of the work that the committee has in view." Mr Rennie seconded the motion. Mr Montgomery asked how the Board was connected with tho committee. The Chairman eaid that the initiative was taken by the Board, and members of the Board were members of the Committee. . •Mr Scott said that the committee c<;iitiidem3 that the £50 was as much as thn Board could give. Mr Montgomery thought that the Board's money should be spent in providing the space for the records, not in getting the records. The motion was carried. The College Committee reported that it could not see its way to recommend the Board to make any payment towards the contributions of professors and others to tho Superannuation Fund; that it had authorised the Lady Principal of the Girls' High School to appoint Miss Mabel Wauchop as teacher of the school swimming classes. The Chairman made a statement in committee in regard to the Chair of Phyeics. The Board resolved that the Professor of Physics to be appointed reach New Zeaf&nd by January Ist, 1911; that Dr. C. Farr be invited to retain his present position and emoluments until December 31st, 1910; that tho High Commissioner be asked to postpone the closing of applications till December 31st, 1809, and* be asked to intimate that the appointee will be asked to make suggestions as to laboratory and equipment. The Board discussed a ( t some length whether it should take steps to come under the Public Bodies' Leases Act. A motion proposed by the Chairman that the Board would not take advantage of the Public Bodies' Leaees Act was negatived by 7 to 4. On, the motion of Messrs Montgomery and Izard it wag resolved that the Board come wilder the Act. >**?&«? . Gfßend. :■ MaflaeaCi-of fee- Railwrote that all concessions on railway fares in the interests of education were made by arrangement with the I 'Education Department, and the Board's application in regard to concessions in fares should' be addressed to I the Education Department.
