LOSSES.

The.rain fell away to a light drizzle early yesterday morning, and later on, when the sun shone out through the | clouds, the rain ceased entirely. The j weather became much warmer towards j mid-day, and the light clouds and blue eky gave promise of a spell of fino weather. A light misty rain commenced at a late hour last night. When the clouds cleared from the summit of Mount Herbert, it was seen that there had boon a fairly heavy fall of snow. No great damage ii> reported from the south side- of the harbour, although there were a number of minor slips. NORTH CANTERBURY. Yesterday, the north branch of the Waimakariri was in flood, and at tihe railway bridge near the Eyreton. line junction some of the paddocks on.both sides of the line were inundated to a depth of eighteen inched. Between the junction and Flaxton istation, for a mile nt least on both sides of the line, the flood was much worse than it has been for some years, and as the overflow from the main drain spread towards the Church Bush district, it will be some days before the waters subside. There wae nlso an overflow of floodwater near the Southbrobk railway station, and the next sea of water on the north line was about Sefton, and thence to the eeaward, whither it was fast escaping along the Drainage Board's works. There was a good supply of flood-water in*the Kowai river, which for months has been all but dry. Tho flood-water at Bennetts on the Cust line of railway decreased yesterday, and the telegraph linemen were able to restore communication with Oxford, which had been interrupted by the wash-out of some of the telephone poles. Tho flood in the Adiley had gone down very considerably* last night. For a time there were four or five streams to be crossed to Teach the south approach of the traffic bridge. Tho torrents rushing through this bridge, which has been-condemned, seemed yesterday to imneril ite safety. In the North Canterbury district the storm eased off on Sunday, but wind and Blight showers were (experienced yesterday. In the three days during which the storm lasted the trees were well thrashsdi, and the apjylo, pear, and plum trees wero denuded of the blosBoms or partly-formed fruit. The rain was driven into houses in all kindti of unexpected places, end' tho storm, rough enough near the houses, twius worse in the open and in the fields. No damage was done, however, to the growing grain crops, except such as were partly submerged near Sefton and at Flaxton by being on the low-lying lands. The rainfall during the recent storm at the Downs, Bennetts, on the Ran-giora-Oxforc! , railway line, was as follows:—Friday, taken at 6 p.m., ,7in; Saturday, taken at 10 a.m., 3.25 in; Saturday, taken at 6 p.m., .63in; Sunday, taken at 10 a.m., ,38in; Sunday, taken at 6 p.m., .38inj total, S.Min. The first fall of .7in, on Friday, «ame down within en hour. On Saturday the temperature was very low. Air though the wind was very Jkeen,; there was not any eeriouis- mortality.; among the lambs in tho neighbourhood. .
