ASHBURTON RAILWAY STATION.

FACILITIES FOR CROSSING THE

LINE WANTED

(PEEBS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)

ASHBURTON, October 6

A public meeting, at Avhich considerably over 200 Avere present, was held in th© Ashburton Oddfellows' Hall last evening to consider the action of tho Railway Department in not allowing foot passengers to cross the line near the station. This privilege the public have been allowed to take advantage of for a period of over thirty years. After considerable discussion, the following resolution A\"as carried, with only one dissentient: "That this representative meeting of the people of Ashburton strongly protests against the action of the Raihvay Department in prosecuting persons for crossing the railway line near the Ashburton station, without providing suitable safe means of crossing at this locality, and would urge tho Government to forthwith consider tho question of moA'ing the goods shed and raihvay station to a more suitable and less dangerous position, and opening up the Wills and Cameron street crossings, thus relieving both Havelock and Burnett streets from being continually blocked as at present with shunting operations. Failing this request being acceded to, in the interests of public safety a subway should be constructed near the present * railway station."
