METHVEN.
The honorary secretary of the Medical Committee reported to a meeting held on Monday that he had! made a thorough canvass of the districts lying within a radius of ten miles of the township, endeavouring to enlist the support of farmers and others towards keeping a doctor in the district. He carried two petitions for signatures:— No 1. For all in favour of the arrangements in existence during the last three yeans being continued, and, No. 2. For all in favour of the committee calling for applications from duly qualified medical practitioners willing to reside and practice their profession in Methven. The former proposal met with very little support, but the latter proposal was largely subscribed to, and the signatories were of opinion that a doctor residing in the district was absolutely necessary. For such they were prepared to subscribe among themselves £200 per annum. It is understood that the committee has decided to iaccede to the wishes of the majority. A meeting of all interested in the formation of a brass hand was held in the Public Library on Tuesday, evening, Mr Leonard Mooar in the chair. There was a large attendance, Lyndhurst, Coirnbrae, and Highhank districts being well represented. It was reported that eight braes instruments, a number of uniforms, and' a substantial cash balance, the property of a previous band, would be'placed at the disposal of the hand now being formed. Mr W. Powell was appointed secretary, and the following were elected a committee :—Messrs Geo. Crawford, N. Mcintosh, W. Powell, S. Carletbn, W. Duff, L. Mooar, and Geo. Ironsides.
