PROHIBITION BY THE BISHOP.
TO THE EDITOR. OP "THE PRESS."
Sir, —I am sorry that our professedly liberal and broad-minded. Bishop Julius should have seen fit to prohibit the Rev. Mr Spencer, the representative of the British and Foreign Bible Society, from preaching in any of the uon-Anglican churches of Canterbury In exercising his prerogative, the Bishop seems to place his will or desire first in importance, and the need of the Bible Society for funds, and its other objects, in quite a secondary place. Bishop Julius, by his edict, offers an insult to the non-Anglican ■churches, and J can assure him that, his action in this matter has shaken tho confidence of many of his own. people in him as a liberal-minded man. If the Bishop wishes success to the British and Foreign Bible Society in their efforts to translate and distribute the Bible among the nations and peoples of the world, the sooner he withdraws the ban placed on the Socity's agent the sooner will he regain the respect and confidence of many Anglicans as well as that of other com' munions.—Yours, etc., CHAS. OVERTON, 263 Hereford street W. July 14th.
P-S.—As a protest against the action of the Bishop, I would suggest that all the moneys collected for the Society by the various non-Anglican churches should be remitted direct to the authorities in London instead of being handed over here "to the Rev. Mr Spencer,.the agent-—C.O.
