NEW DEVELOPMENT IN WELLINGTON.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)
WELLINGTON, July 3. Mr Glennie, the Harbour Board lahour foreman, yesterday bad great difficulty in finding labour on the wharves. The Turakina and Morayshire caused a rush of work, and when %8 men were wanted at 8 o'clock they could not bo got. Several, when approached, refused to work. Mr Glennie had to take men off the whitewashing work in order to meet th© emergency. Mr McLaren, M.P., secretary of the Wharf Labourers' Union, speaking to a "Post" reporter, said this was no surprise to him. Th© best men had gone to Australia. He could understand men who were regularly employed by shipping companies or on coal work refusing. Their absence would prejudice them for future long engagements. It did not pay to take up a few hours' "chance work."
