SYDENHAM v. OLD BOYS.

This match was played on the east ground, and although the conditions made it little better than a mudscramble, Sydenham deserved their win, as their forwards showed more combination and effectiveness in their Work than the ex-School players. - Sydenham kicked off from the south end, but. with the assistance of fhe wind, Old Boys had the better of the early play, and the rushes of their forwards kept Sydenham busy. For the greater part of tho spell the play consisted ot forward rushes, which for a while were unproductive, but at length the Sydenham forwards came down the held with a rush that- found the Old

Boys' defence lacking, and Hutching., scored in a good position. Doell converted the try. A few minutes later Sydenham again set up a strong attack, and Hutchings potted a goal,- the spell ending with the score 9-—0 in favour of Sydenham. At the opening ot the second spell the Old Boys got briskly to -work, and they . gave the Sydenham backs an anxious timo. With play in the Sydenham twenty-five, Hutohings broke through to the Old Boys' half, but D. Guthrie effected a fine save. Sydenham kept up the attack, and the Old Boys had to force down. J. Guthrie was noticeable for some defensive work, and the White forwards then rallied, and kept play in the Sydenham twenty-five. Overeagerness lost some capital chances and the Sydenham forwards, headed by Campbell, took the ball to the Old Boys' line. J. Guthrie checked tlio

onslaught, and Guiney followed up with a dash that compelled Doell to force down. This the Old Boys' finai effort, and for the remainder of tbe game Sj-denham held the upper hand. Tune was called with the score—Sydenham 9 points (a goal from a try and a potted goal), Old Boys nil. Mr H. F. Garrard was referee.
