CREMATION.
APPLICATION TO THE CITY COUNCIL.
CITY DESTRUCTOR SUGGESTED
At the meeting of the Christchurch City Council -apt night* the following letter was received from Dr. C. J. Russell:— * 'Having a desire to have my body cremated after my decease, and there being no Crematorium in a reasonable distance to. which my remains can be conveyed for that purpose, and having satisfied myself that, the service can be performed at tho City Destructor successfully, and having provided means in my will for the payment of any and all costs, connected with the cremation; and feeling that cremation is th© most reasonable, speedy, sound, and satisfactory method for the disposing of the dead and for resolving decayed matter into its original elements, you are most respectfully solicited to grant ray trustee authority to have my remains cremated at th© City Destructor, and to arrange all details, with your representative (that is, the City Surveyor), for the successful conduct of the same, it being clearly understood that you are to be at ho loss or cost whatsoever in the matter." Cr. Horsley stated that there was already a crematorium at Wellington. Cr. Forrester moved that the matter bs referred to the Reserves Committee. The Mayor: With power to act? Cr. Forrester: I have no objection. Cr. Horsley: Does that mean that we havo power to cremate the doctor P Cr. Dougall: Oh, yes. Cr. Taylor seconded the resolution in tbo form suggested by the Mayor, and it was carried.
