CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
ADMISSION OF INCURABLES
Tito North Canterbury Charitable Aid Board met yesterday, when there were present:—Messrs F. Horrell (chairman). C. J. Harper, 11. Friedlandcr, J. Wolfe, G. W. J. Parsons, W. Radcliffc, B. P. Manhire, J. Davidson, J. Ingram, G. Bedford., and J. Henderson, Mrs Dunkley, and Major Burgess.
Pursuant to notice, Mr Davidson moved tnat the Board should denno what cases should bo admitted to the new annexes at the A&hburton and Woolston Homes. He considered that tho annexes should be utilised ior the admission of destitute adult incurables.
Mr Manhire pointed out that the Board hud already decided to admit that class of patient to tho annexes.
The Cnairman said there were several incurables at present in the hospital, and it wa.s the duty of the Board having established the Homes, to takecharge of those, people. It was proposeu, however, to admit adult patients onJy, not children.
Mr Jtiarper said that by accepting those people the Board were reaiiy establishing c new hospital. The patients would require uk much attention us hospital patients, and the scheme would prove a very costly one. The Board, however, could , not refuse to aumit adult incurables.

Mr Harper said the Board had a!leady adopted, the change by agreeing to build the annexe.
Mr i'Yiedlander said that tho notice oi motion as given was that the Board bliould define what ease;;) should, bo admined to tho annexes. That would have, to be dealt with first before the question then under discussion could be taken.
'iho motion was carried, and Mr Frk-dlander then moved tliat the resolution should be referred to the respective committees of the two homes to bring up a report at the .next meeting.
Mr Rudcliffo urged that the Board should deal with the matter of the class of patient to be admitted.
Mr Manhire proposed an amendment that each application for admission should be dealt with by the proper committee on its merits.
The amendment was seconded by Mi Radoliffe.
Tho amendment was adopted, with an addition that the oases should be vonsider«.<] irrespective of age. Mr Harper reported that the subcommittee- appointed to compare tonality and value of tho various articles required for furnishing at Woolston and Ashburton had carefully examined the ecve.ra-l tenders —tho pri<res snowing thai competition in those goods v.as very keen. After a close inspection of the numerous samples submitted, the committee- was of opinion that the Board would _bo justified in the execution of tho whole contract to A. J. AVhiU". Ltd., and therefore reconi mended the acceptance of that firm's W.-iidcr. subject to a slight modification in details.

Mr Davidson, chairman of t heFinance Committee, said that the Board could only make th»» annual grant to the trustee on condition that the £100 was raised before March 31st. That had not hern done, but the amount had sinco been made up. and it was & question whether the Board could now loyally make tl,e payment. Oh Mr motion., it was de cided to make the, payment, provided the Audit Department would give an assurance that the irregularity, if any, would be waived.
The Chairman said that the Government proposed to discontinue the practice oi issuing printed returns relating to charitable aid relief in the Dominion" Mr Friedlander proposed that th» Board t-hnuld ro.sume its practice* of issuing a list to its contributing: bodies periodically.
Mr Mnnhiro said that ihe Government might be asked to sugcest to other charitable aid boards to issue and circulate .similar lists.
Mr Friedlander said that that proposal had already been tried before, bui had not proved a success.
The motion was carried
The secretary of the Tramway Board wrote, stating that thr« Board was prepare! to lay down a tramline over a portion of the Twigyer Estate at Adin accordance witli the sketch plan submitted. The Board would be jilad if arrangements could made for the work to be nut in hand as soon as iM»sible after possession was given on August Ist.
The letter was referred to the Finance Committee.
A pronosal from the Government to purchase 40 acres of land near Tβ Oranya Home na> aho referred to the Finau'.e Committee.
