CHARITABLE AID.
Mr R. H. Rhodes, chairman of the Waimate County Council, when dealing, at the last meeting of the Council, with the finance of the County, said that the question of Hospital and Charitable Aid was assuming a very eerious aspect. The amount £'aid the County on this account in 1899 was £930; sinco then the demand had been steadily increasing, and tho amount of levy demanded for the current year was £2151. "When the old ago pension scheme was inaugurated in 1899, it was urged by its promoters that the demands for charitable aid would be lessened, but apparently these anticipations had not b.nn realised. "While recognising that their population was increasing, still he did not think the increased demand could be solely attributed to a corresponding increase of sicklies:- and destitution in the district, and while the Council had! erery confidence in its representatives on the South Canterbury H<.«pital Board, still, in tho interests ot the ratepayers, upon whom this rate was now pressing heavily, he could not refrain from urging upon them the necessity for a strict surveillance over the expenditure.
The chairman's remarks were endorsed by the whole of the Council.
