AUSTRALIAN NAVAL POLICY.
SELF-RELIANCE ADVOCATED
United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright. PERTH, April 30. Tho Federal .Minister for Home Affairs (the Hon. Mr Thomas) spoke last night in defence of Mr Fisher's naval defence proposals. He advocated the abandonment of tho naval subsidy altogether. Australia should initiate her own defence on the ocean, because the spirit of self-reliance could not co-exist with the spirit cf dependence, because Australia would have no control over the ships subsidised, and because in the event of war, the Australian Squadron would be withdrawn, leaving the Australian seas unprotected. A proportionate subsidy would bleed Australia of millions and leave her unprotected in the hour of need.
