GOLDEN WEDDINGS.
1 Mr and Mrs R. M. "Wright celebrated their golden wedding by holding a family gathering at the residence of Mr C. H. Wright, Town Clerk, at Kaiapoi, on Thursday. Mr R. M. Wright came to New Zealand in tho ship Stag in May. 1852, and Mrs Wright, who is the eldest daughter of tho late Mr James Baker, arrived in December, 1830. in the ship Cressy. Mr Wright undertook a number of contracts as a builder, and in 1878 was appointed surveyor to the Eyreton Road Board, and subsequently lo West Eyreton Board, lie was interested in starting Oddfellow >hip in tho northern district in 185S, and has been connected with the Order as an office-bearer and trustco ahnobt continuously. He was the- first borough fire, inspector and superintendent of the Kaiapoi Firo Brigade, has boon an enthusiastic volunteer, oarsman, and cricketer, and has filled many public positions. Mr Wright's lather, who is ninety years of ago, was engaged in tho Spanish wars of 1836. being with the forces defending Queen Isabella 11. of Spain against the insurgent troops of Don Carlos. Mr Wright, sonr., was one of the recruits to the British Legion raised by Sir De Laov Evans in England for tho Queen, and Mr Wright was present at the deI feat of the Carlists at San Sebastian in October, 1836. and nt the taking of Trim in May, 1839. Tho British auxiliaries evacuated San Sebastian in August, 1840, the Carlists'having concluded a treaty of peace and Don Carlos having fled to France during the previous year. Of the events of the period. Mr Wright, who is an old colonist, has a vivid recollection. The golden wedding of Mr and Mrs M. Howe, and the silver wedding of their son and daughter-in-law. Mr and! Mrs W. Howe, were celebrated at Ran- j iiiora on Thursday. Relatives and friend'; to the number of about two hundred ! assembled in i\w Oddfellows' Hall, Ran- i ciora, where the function was held. Breakfast was served at midday, and a social gathering vis held in the evening. Mr and Mrs Rowe. senr.. are old residents ol the district.
