INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES.
I (PiBSS ASSOCIATION TELXOBAU.) AUCKLAND, April 30. The Arbitration Court made an award on lines of the agreement arrived at between the parties to the ship and boatbuilders' dispute. A feature of the agreement is the paying of Is 4d per hour for repairing work, that meaning all work on a vessel other than that performed in the process of construction. Tlie award in the shipmasters' dispute provides for an annual leave of fourteen days on full pay. Wages were fixed as follows:—'Masters of steamers from 1001 tons to 1700 tons gross register, £27 a month; between 601 and 1000 tons, £2,5 a month; between 241 and 600 tons, £22 a month; between 151 and 240 tons, £18 a month; between 25 and 100 tons, £1G a month. The above scale does not apply to tho intercolonial and Home trade. For sailing vessels the following scale of wages shall apply: —601 tons net register and over, £17 a month; 401 to 600 tons, £16 a month; under 401 tons, £15 a month. Tho conference between tho Builders' and Contractors' Association and tho Labourers' Union, held in Aucktho Labourers' Union, at which Mr T. H. Giles presided, arrived at a satisfactory settlement of the dispute. Representatives of both sides expressed unqualified satisfaction at the manner in which the Commissioner had' acted. The labour representative expressed surprise and pleasure at the tact and business .ability displayed by Mr Giles. There was no question he was the right man in the right place.
