MALVERN SHOW.
The Malvern A. and P. Association were favoured -nith splcnilid -weather for their annual winter show, h«ld yesterday, on the Sheffield Domain. The.i* was an excellent attcudanw, and thefliow passed very successfully, tho President, Mr P. H. Johnson, taking an active interest in the prceeedinsii, and was well supported by the other ofiiciais. Mr C. A. Opie, the new secretary, was energetic in tlio perform«nca of his rlutifs. IMr O. A. C. Hardy, M.P., patron of tho Association, was present during the day. The Springfield Brass Hand supplied a cood proiiraiamc of music. The general entries showed a satisfactory increase, except in roots, tho turnip crops having been badly affected by blight and' moths. In light hoists thero was a good show of young stock, and the mostsuccessful exhibitors ivere Messrs \V. J. Jenkins, F. E. Cogan, A. Turnbull, J. do P. Moiison, PI. C. Townead, and P. H. Johnson, and Mj- F. Buseh in brood maros. Sn<ld!e> and harness horsoe formed! strong eisusses, and some of the placed animals were really good. Messrs A. and W. Gillanders were vreW ropresentsd, and won in 11-stone hacks, cob up to 14.3 hands, and ponies, and second in several other classes. Mts F. J. Savill 'was first in the lady's hoc?; and , 11-stone hunter classes, and otlioi winners Mere Messrs P. H. Johnson. F. E. Cogan, W. G. Smith, T. Cooper, and F. L. Lanrfrey.
Thero was a largor entry of cattle than in any previous year, consisting mostly of useful daily coirs oml v few young fitoefc. Sheep were well represented in both numbers and quality. The lambs were exceptionally good and of heavy weight. The Down cross lambs shown by Messrs T. Innes. W. J. Jenkins, and McClelland 1 Bros, were very fine, and Messrs D. McMillan, A. Herioy, and A. Gunn won with good l pens of white-faced: find longwool cross lambs. Mr P. H. Johnson was again first in freezing •wethers with a pen of well-finished halfbreds, and first in mcTino -wethers, and Mr P. Bull scored another win ivith. purebred Shropshires in the any -weight class of wethers, Mr W. J. Jenkins being second with a fine pen of Southdown cross. A large number of pet lambs that had evidently been iveil looked) after -wero led into a ring, Moana Wileteed gaining first prize, Oliver Ge-m----mell second, and Mrs" M. Askew was highly commended. After the chow, Mr A. Gunn's first prize longwool cross lambs were sold for 20s, and! another pen in<the same'class brought ISs. Mr Johnson's first prize halfbred wethers made IGs. The president's special prizo for a pen of halfbred wethers suitable for freezing was Avon by F. E. Cogan, and Mr D. McMillan's second prize went to Mr A. W. Adams. Mr G. H. Judd's special prizes for a. pen of, breeding ewes most suitable for a farmer were won by the Hotnebush Estate, and: Mr F. sen.; and Messrs W. J. Jenkins and tho President's special prizes for ewe hoggets for breeding purposes were awarded to Messrs F. 15 Oocan and J. dc P. Monson. There were a few good purebred sheep shown by breeders in" -the district, the prize-winners being:—Messrs R. and J. Reid and W. J. Jenkins in English Leicestersj A. Gunn and P. Morrison in Border Leicesters, F. Bxill in Shropshires, W. J. Jenkins and H. A. Knight in Southdowns. Pigs were represented by a few wellbred , and there was a small show of poultry. The entries of doms formed the usual classes of working ooflies, and there was also a number of spaniels shown.
Considering the good crops this year, a larc;or entry of grain might have been expected. The wheat was very fair, and the oats of very good quality. Among the flatter were some fine samples of Webb's Black Tartars and Webb's Challenge, shown by Mr H. A. Knight. There were fair entries of gross seed, and though the classes for roots were very well filled, there was a failing off in both numbers and quality as compared with last year. The first prize winners in potatoes were Messrs C. H. Adams, A. Heney, R. Hodason, H. Roper, and G. Butler, fhe swedes and yellow-fleshed turnips w «ro fair, but the 1 soft turnips had gone off badly. The chief prize winners in turnips were Messrs A. Gunn, Tiios. Innes, A. Honey., and F. Tully; and Mr Yl. J. Jenkins was most successful in mangels. The caTrots were only fair, and there wore several very good collections of farm roots, Mr F. E. Cogan being the winner; and Mr W. T. Baxter was first with a collection of farm vegetables; Mr F. Tully won Messrs Ivemptborne, Prosser and Co.'s special prize for collection of tuTnipe. For exhibition only. Mi H. A. Knight sent a. very fine collection of garden produce. The classes for house and dairy produce, as usual, attracted good competition, and the- home-made butter wa* of better quality than is now usually seen at shows. In the fruit classes a feature was a very fine collection shown by Mr T. W. Adams. The judges were:—Draught horses, Messrs V. R. LochJiead and R. R,idlight horses, Messrs J. D. Hall and W Hayward; cattle, pigs, and competitions. Mr A. Henderson; fat sheep and lambs, Messrs J. Sowden and J .iVmght; purebred sheen, Mr F J Andrew; poultry, Mr C. "Deal; grain and seeds, Mr J).
