The Collector of Customs at New York has ordered the American Sugar Refining Company to pay 1,239,000 dollars, duties evaded between 1901 and 1907, by means of falsa weights. The Government ia claiming another million dollars on imports prior to IPOI. Dr. Eliot, ex-president of Harvaid University, has declined the American Embassy in London, on the gound of his age.

It was reported recently that extensive Customs frauds of another kind' had been unearthed in New York. It was found that goods were systematically under-valued for duty purposes, and huge fees were paid to lawyers for their services in advising big firms as to the best way to defraud the Customs officials.
