THE VOLUNTEERS.
KAIAPOI RIFLES. The Kaiapoi Eifle Volunteers held their twenty-third annual meeting on Tuursday. Captain E. E. Pappritl presided, and twenty-five members wero present, including Lieuts. T. A. Gates and J. L. Conlan. Tlie balance-sheet showed total receipts £181 5s _d. The expenditure showed:—Paid on private camp, £30 4s 3d; range and shooting, £i>6 tiis; drilLshcd improvements, £34 9s 9d. After some discussion tho statement was adopted. Tho chairman pointed out there was a balance of company's funds in the No. 1 Battalion fund, and that apart from this lodgment for uniforms, there were available cash assets of about £40. Committees and officials were appointed. Lieut. Gates was unanimously elected captain. In thanking the company, he said he felt very highly honoured, and knew he had a difficult position in following Captain Papprill, but would do his utmost to worthily fill the position, and he trusted to have the cordial co-operation of all ranks./ In reference to the question of resignations, which had brought the strength lower than it had ever been, a recruiting committee, consisting of Lieut. Conlan, Colour-Sergeant Oram, Sergeant Drabble, Corporals Puddle nnd Martin, Privates Templeton, Bryden, and Haigh was appointed. The questions of grants to shooting cadets, band, etc., were referred to a committee, also the question of lighting tho hall with gas. The smoke concert was fixed for April Snd, and a Managing Committee was appointed.
