THEATRE ROYAL.
There was a large and enthusiastic audienco at the Theatre Royal last night when ' 'The Taming of the Shrew" was- repeated for the last time. Tne piece went excellently throughout. Tonight the stronit drama, "The Thief," will be staged for the first time in Christchurch. It is said to bring from England, America, and more recently from Australia, a reputation which points to the piece being ono of tho most powerful dramas of the day. "The Thief" is an adaptation from tho French of Henri Bernstein, and is said to be a play of striking emotional power and intensity—having a remancably well constructed . plot which holds a thrilling interest to the fall of the final curtain. Briefly the story is that of a society womua, who indulges iii expensive clothes, that she may look pretty in tho eyes of her too devoted husband, her passion for dress ultimately leading her to theft. The part of the wife will be filled by Miss Ola Humphrey and that of Richard Voysin, the husband, -by Mr Kolker. Tho latter part is one which is said to affords plenty of scope for Mr Kolker's undoubted talents as an actor. The piece will only be played for three nights.
