Tho tennis courts and croquet lawn recently laid down by tho Lytteltou Borough Council on tho old Orphanage site. West Lytt-elt-on. the old and new Governor's Bay ro-adt. were formally opened yesterday afternoon by the Mayor of Lyttolton. (Mr C. Cook 1. There was a large attendance, including councillors, members of the Club, and many ladies. In lormally declaring the court open, the Mayor stat-od that this was the first trochoid recreation ground I.yttelton had ever had. An arrangement had been entered into between the Council and the Lytt-elton Lawn Tennis Club hv which the latter controlled tho ground, but that wonl<l not debar the public trom the use and enjoyment of the place. Tho Mayor then declared the courts open, and played a -<-t with the ilavorcss. Mr j. I! WOUI. chairman of tIV Estate, Committee of the Council, which had charge of the work of laying out the- « flirts, handed over the key.-, of the g- ■ouu'l to Mr P. I , :. Afternoon tea was provided by the lady member* of t lie* Club, and several games of tennis were afterwards play-d. A neat and substantia! pavilion has been erected <*>n the ground, which now presents a very attractive appearance. Tho whole of the work has boon carried out by prison labr;-:ir at a co.,t of about £100.
