' Tlie ordinary meeting of the Hospital r I Board wa.s Juki yesterday. Present — i Messrs AY. Duiilop (in tlie chair), J. v I Slurry. J. Murray, J. Ingram, F. Hor- •' ; rell. J. AYolfe. T\ D. Boag, and T. N. '- Horsley. anil the Mayor ot Christchurch. ° ! Tht-'chairmaii said that Mr Pnyling. '{ i the Cbuirman of the Beard, bad met '* ; with an acci.ie-nt which confined him 'i ' to the house. He bad written a letter j ■ -stating that he did net think that the ... j proposal U> appoint the- whole Board as -.• : a committee to deal with the work now '- | done by separate committees was a - | good one. lie favoured the- appomtt i meat ot separate committees for tinaiice, ii , house, and sanatorium. _ | The letter was received. t : Tlie Chairman, in tno absence of Mr j Paylmg. moveil tbe motion standing | m his name, which was to the effect r j that the rule making the whole Board v j the House Committee be rescindeel. '- i -Mr Horsley secoiule-el the motion, as L - j he tiieiuglit the work would bo tar lu-t- ---| tor done by a snialler coinuiitte-e than n the whole Board. The motion was 10--t. vj Mr Hone II moved: —••That a com- - I inittce be appointed to make enquiries l ! as to the best means of supplying niedi- • cal attention or hospital accommodation n te> country elistricts, to report to tho Baard. " i lie wants of the city and Lyttelton were well suppliei), but the country, be themght, was not so well lonk- " e-it alter, particularly in North Canterbury, as they should like to see. The *- motion would not commit the Board to - .. iiything. All that was asked lor was 1 a report on the subject. i" Mr Ingram seconded the motion. The Mayor was in favour of the mo- ,. tion, as equitably tbe country elistricts . were entitled to receive consideration. ~ As a member of tho Boarel he would be in favour ot voting for a sum of ~ money to induce doctors to settle in I some of the outlying districts, ■j The motion was. after some little discussion, put anel carried. Messrs Davidson, Ingram, Storry, and " Horrell were proposed as the" cura- •- mittee by Mr Horrell, but subsequently on the suggestion of several members, l Mr Horrell altered the motion so as to . make the House Committee the hotly f to institute enquiries, and this was I agreed to. y The ladies' committee wrote, handing over a cheque for £3770 13s 2d, j in aid cf tlie Children's AVard. Tho , committee urged that the building should be commenced. at once, and also that the building should be quite up to elate. Tho committee further suggested that th. ladies' committee should be rex-resented on the Building Committee The Mayer congratulated the Indies' committee and tho subscribers generally on the very satisfactory results of their 1 work. Ho congratulated, the public on - the fact that the springs ol benevolence were not entirely "dried rti> l-y the legislation which' imposed rates. He ! quite agreed with the suggestion of ,' the ladies' committee that adornment should give way to convenience. As to | the axjpointment of a member or members of the committee from outside the members of the Board, he did not think that they could do so. At least, such members could not vote. Still, he would move:—"That a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to the Ladies' Committee for their splendid' efforts." Mr Horrell seconded tbe motion. The motion, with the addition of the words '"and that the Ladies' Committee be informed that the suggestions con- j tai-ned' in their letter would be carried I **"•* as far os po--_i-bk_" was agreed to. -Ihe Chairman of the honorary staff (Dr. Aeland.) wrote with reference to the proposals for the enlargement of the Hospital that without the assistance of an architect the staff ooifld not formulate any proposals. .It was suggested that a committee should bo set to consider the matter. .Some discussion ensued as to whether the question should be remitted to the House Committee (comprising the whole Board) or to a special committee. Ultimately .. deputation comprising Drs. Aeland (chairman of the honorary medical staff), Mill and Crooke and the matron, Miss Thurston, waited on the Board with reference to the proposed alterations. Dr. Aeland said that now the money had bee n .raised for the children's ward it would bo more economical to continue the work of erection of the Female Surgical AA'ard with that- of the Children s AAard. The honorary staff thought that they should arrange so as ~o have tho corridor placed iv a different position to its present one. They wanted the building to ho a twostoreyed one, and tho Children's AYard should be in the upper storey. In .reply to a question from* Mr Horrell, The Matron said the'ladies did most distinctly expect that the- whole of the money collected for the Children's AVard would be expended on the Children's Ward. If the whole amount was not used, the Ladies' Committee would, she lelt sure, desire that the; money left over should lie kept as a reserve fund for t;bo upkeep of the ward. Drs. Aeland and Crooke then explained to the Board, by the plans, what the proposals of the hjiiorary medical staff were. The Mayor,, oil the question of tho allocation of the funds between the Children s Ward and the Female .Surgi- "-*•■»■ AYard, suggested that the tenders called for should state what amount was lor each. The Chairman said that the members o tiie Ji.--:n--I would meet the members <>l the honorary medical staff <, n t'-e site and then, with the architect-;' proposals before them, they could go into tlie whole matter. It- was resolve:.' to call a (-.r-eeial meeting ii. tin.- House Committee for AVodnesday next to meet the honorary medi-c-.l st-,ff i- was decided to ask the .1; •, , .* S V a »: ¥ .:"'te 0 connected with the (bildrens v\ ard te /send representatives. - The- Chairman (Mr G. Pavling) wrote stating that mik-i- the last meeting theBoard bad taken over {he Consumption .Sanatorium. It would, therefore, be lie--.-s-tiry to take in hand several works. J be-so would include the filling tip of crevices iji the made-up -.-round and t.'ie asphahmg of the tacit pat lis. Thrsc 'vi.rk-- should he dealt with in fine weatiicr. He noted with plea>ure the re- , suits of the canvass for ninds for the ' Children's AY'ard. narl he congratulate! the cnmmittf ;■. Hence it would be necessary to select the best site for .' the purpose. The matters raised in the letter wero referred to the House Committee. A letter was received frcm i)r. Finch stating that he* cstimateel that 3 there were about 200 consumptives in Canterbury. There- were about cigbty fre-sh cases each year. He suggested that prevision should be made lor thirty patients directly. The actual \ number of consumptives in Canterbury _ was not known to the Department. fi . Tho motion was agreed to. I
