OLD AGE PENSIONS

United Frees Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, February 4. Mr C. E. H. Hobhouee, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, states that £9,000,000 must be found for old age pensions.

Mr Aaquith's first estimate was that the pensione would coert £6,000,000 per annum. The. modifications and extensions introduced during the committee stage of the Bill were estimated to have increased the total cost by £1,000,000 to £1,500,000. The "Standard" recently estimated the number of pensioners at 626,000, against the estimate of 500,000 in the Budget of last year. "Some additional allowance must be made for the cost of administering the Act, especially on account of the additional labour involved in dealing with a larger number of applicants and a larger number of investigations as to means than were originally anticipated. The financial difficulties of the Government are growing, feud each day appears to add only to theso difficulties and to increase the irritability and exasperation of the members of the Government."
