COUNTY COUNCILS.

WAIMATE. The last meeting of the Waimate County Council was attended by Messrs Rhodes (chairman), T. Milne, T. Hart, F. White, H. Elworthy, J. Bitchener, A. Walker, and G. Lyall. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote approving of tho erection of a stock bridge at Cannington Village. The sum of £10 was voted towards the expenses of the South Canterbury Jubilee celebrations. Thursday was selected as tho day for tho weekly half-holiday in tho district. Tho following tenders were accepted:— Hakataramea Valley road, J. Fogarty, £250; Howell's and Motukaike roads, It. White, £118 9s 6d; North Bush road, It. White. £46 ISs. Mr Lyall asked for the services of the engineer in planning and supervising works for the protection of the Springbrook school from the encroachment of the Pareora river. This the Council decided on doing. It was resolved that noticeboards, be erected at the entrances to the Waimate Gorge, directing motorcar drivers to k°e_> tho proper side in driving along the Gorge road. Five councillors wore appointed to consider the matter of improving the acoustic properties of the County Hall.
