MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Mr H. W r . Bishop, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. For having been found drunk a male firs; offender voa fined ss, in defoult tv enty-four hours' imprisonment. An old age pensioner, for a similar offence, v.as convicted and was ordered to forfeit one month's instalment of his pension.

George Hemsley, charged -with having no visible lawful means of support, pleaded guilty. He stated that he was a hotel porter, that his homo was in Dunedin, that when h© camo to this city two months ago he had £17 odd. that he had been unable to get work, and that he intended going grass-seed-ing. The police case wns that accused had not done any work, and was associating with undesirable persons. Ilia Worship, in convicting and discharging accused, warned hira that if he came before the Court on a similar charge ho would bo sent to gaol, because lie would bo far better in gaol than going about the streets and qualifying to be a confirmed criminal. Minnie Goodman was similarly charged. Mr Leathern, who appeared for her, said that she was willing to fro to a relative's in the country. His Worship, in convicting accused and ordering her to come up for sentence when called upon, said that if she did not keep away from town and from the streets, he'would have to treat hor as an ordinary criminal. Mary Watt, with three previous convictions against ber, was fined 40s, in default one month's imprisonment, for Laving disobeyed a prohibition order. Edward Ingham, similarly charged, was fined 10s, in default to bo imprisoned for fourteen days. A chnige against John Fred. Bcthke (Mr Donnelly), of having accompanied Ingham into licensed premises, was dismissed, defendant stating that he was not .ware that Ingham was prohibited. George Weaver acknowledged that he was £'11 4s in arrears in respect to the maintenance of his wife in a public institution. Ho stated that ho had been only six -weeks out of gaol after serving a sentence of five years. His Worship suspended tbo order so lont; as Weaver continued to pay Is per ■week. In Kent (Mr Donnelly) v Thos. Kent his Worship ordered defendant to pay costs 215., railing compliance with tho crder, defendant to be iniiprisoned for '.wo months. In Gilmour (Mr Ouninshnm) v Hewlett, defendant consented to an order being made of 10s per week in respect to each of the threo children. His Worship ordered that separate orders in respect to each child should bo made.

Amy Marnell (Mr Donnelly) sued her husband, I.uke Marnell (Mr Cnssidy), for maintenance. Defendant was ordered to pay 15s per week. RANGIORA. At the Rnn'jiora Magistrate's Court yesterday judgment was given for plaintiffs, with costs, by Messrs E. R. Good and C. I. Jennings, J.P.'s. in the case of the North Canterbury Cooperative Stores Company (in liquidation) v. H. S. Calder, £3 19s 2d, and costs ss.
