(mtSS ASSOCIATION TELEOBA.M). MASTERTON, December 4. Owing to the reduced demand for timber and the prevailing prices for timber conmanies have decided to close their sawmills for the time being. The mills in the Wairarapa district belonging to the Wairarana Sawmilling Association have notified their employees that work will bo stopped in a few days' timo. A considerable number of joiners and carpenters are just now out of work in the'district, and the depression in the building trade is being felt by the tradesmen acutely. INVERCARGILL, December 4. In accordance with a resolution of last month, the sawmills in Southland will bo closed down to-morrow. About thirty-five mills, employing uj>wards of 700 men, will be affected. The mills ■are being closed this year about a fortnight earlier than usual, in consequence of slackness in trade. The date of re-opening has not been definitely fixed.
