ANGLING NOTES.
South Canterbury anglers are looking forward to good sport at the opening of the season (October Ist). The rivers are in splendid order and are teeming with fish. The South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society is advised it will be at liberty to take shortly, from the Gore rnnient hatcheries at Hakataramea, 60,000 brown trout ova. Thi3 gilt is in return for the privilege of stripping in the Opihi river which tho South Canterbury Society extends to the Government every year. The telegraphic report on the condition of the various rivers in Canterbury received on Saturday stated that tho Waimakariri (north and south branches), Ashburton (lower), and the Itakaia were clear; the Opihi was in goad order; the Ashburton (mouth). Rangitata, and Waitaki were discoloured, although the lastnamed was fushable; and the. Selwyn and * Ashburton (upper) were dirty.
