Year by year the stock exhibited at these shows continues to improve in quality, and the healthy rivalry that exists between the various exhibitors undoubtedly encourages the breeding of nothing but tho best. How greatly appreciated is tho provision of suitable sires is apparent from the fact that nominations for 220 cart mares, 142 half bred mares, 545 cows and heifers, and 140 sows have this season been taken to the stallione bulls, and boars provided by the Duke of Portland for the use of his tenantry. Messrs Threlkeld and A. Holmes were elected members of tho Association. The prospects ahead of agriculturists ! in South Canterbury are very bright this season (writes oiir correspondent). A very favourable spring has been experienced ; pastures and groi 1 crops are making aplendid growth under meet favourable conditions; the/lambin-g percentage promises |to -■» high, aiid the young lambs are doing very •well. There has been more wheat than usual put in this year, and as a result it is predicted that ivhile payable prices may be confidently looked for. next season, this cereal will not command the same high prices as have ruled for the gast two years. !
