(from ottr own correspondent). LONDON, August 14. Mr and Airs Charles B. Shanks (ChrLstchuTch) came to England' chiefly to see their son, who has been living in London for the past ten years, following his profession as.an electrical engineer. Mr and Airs Shanks have placed no limit on tho duration of their stay on this side of the world— tho former having Tctired from tho Lands and Survey Department of tho New Zealand Civil Service. Scotland is shortly to be toured; tho winter months will bo passe- at a warm, seaside resort, and next year, if health permit, Atr and Mrs Shanks will go on the Continent.

. Air F. Heasman (Christchurch) has been in South Af rioa for tho past four and a half years, 'but ho is now in London, having contracted in June Last to take the steamship Alfred Nobel (belonging to tho South African Salvage Company) from Capetown to London. At present he is on a holiday visit to England; toward the end of this month he will Jo_.V~_* lor Capetown on business, and, after three weeks in South Africa, Mr Heasman will go on to Christchurch, which city he left eleven years ago. Air and Airs Sydney Smith, their niece, Aliss Daisy Turton (Christchurch) and Alt Howard Smith havo been on the Continent for the last six weeks, visiting Paris, Nice, Alonve Carlo, Genoa, Milan-, Venice, Florence, Cernobbio, and Stress; from Switzerland they travelled back to Paris, where a few more days were passed before tho Channel was again crossed. For the last fortnight Aliss Turton has been staying at Werndec Hall, South Norwood, the. residence of her uncle. Next week, thoy leave I-onddn for Alargate, and on the 2oth September, Miss Turton and Air Howard Smith sail by the s.s. Moldavia on their return journey' to Christchurch. Late callers at the London office of the New Zealand Government included:—Airs C. Kirby (Auckland) and Aliss Kirby, Air E. H. Tribe (New Plymouth), who leaves on his return voyage on the 27th inst., the Alisses Kerr (Timaru)' and Mr E. (i. Kerr. Mr T. Brown (Dunedin), Air A, G. Jones (Wellington), Air Newman Hal! Haytor (Wanganui), Air and Airs A. Silk (Wellington), Air W. 'Alilier AlcKenzio (Oamaru), Air Percy Douglas (Auckland), Atr Lawrence H. Tingey (Wellington), Air and Airs Aubrey Wi'bi (Dunedin), Air Joseph Snell (Christchurch), Air W. Watts (Christen urch__ Air Cedric F. White (Christchurch), Air A. E. Wilson (Christchurch).

Air Cunningham Uridgeman, the wollknown London journalist, arrived Home by the s.s. Athenic last week, after his visit of eight months to New Zealand. He hopes to publish before long a volume of personal notes and impressions of New Zealand. Having Drought to England with him the score and libretto ot Air Alfred Hill's opera, "A -Aloorish Alaid," the merits of which he formed a high opinion after bearing it several times in Dunpdin, Afr Bridgeman is now busily engaged in efforts to form a company to produce tho opera iv London during next season.
