SLY GROG SELLING.
A FINE OF £20.
Charles William Hensley appeared at the Magistrate's Court yesterday on a charge of, on July 4th, selling liquor without being licensed, to do so, to a young man named Henry Gibson. Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., was on the Bench. Sub-Inspector Dwyer conducted the prosecution, and Mr Donnelly appeared for accused.
Henry Gibson stated that on Saturday week, at about 10.30 p.m., he visited accused's oystor saloon, and had a plate of oysters. Hβ also asked for "a lubrication" (to use his own words), and accused gave him a glass of beer. Witness paid sixpence for the oysters and sixpence for beer. Edward Dondee, who was also in the saloon at tho same time as Gibson, gave evidence of a similar nature.
Sergeant Burrows said 1 he had visited , the saloon, where ho had partaken of oysters and beer, but ho had not paid for the latter. He had visited the place on the morning of Sunday, July sth, end had found a demijohn containing beer, a bottle containing rum, and , beer bottles.
. The defence by Henslev was an absolute denial of soiling beer. He had not soon Gibson before, and "did not know him ffom Adam." The liquor was for his own use.
The Magistrato imposed' a fine of £20 and costs.
