FOOTBALL.

CANTERBURY RUGBY UNION.

The Management Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union met last evening. Present—Messrs G. H. Mason (in tbe chair), J. R. Evans, G. Scott, P. Menzies, W. Walton, F. T. Evans, F. L. Murray, S. F. Wilson, and W. G. Garrard (bon. secretary). The Chairman stated that at last meeting they had received a deputation in.regard to making Saturday a universal half-holiday, and it now remained for that committee to suggest what steps the Union should , take in the matter. After discussion, it was decided to vote the Saturday Halfholiday Movement Committee the sum of £10 10s.

The New Zealand Rugby Union forwarded a cheque for fifteen guineas for the encouragement of football in public schools. It was decided to Hand the cheque over to the authorities who control the school football.

Mr F. T. Evans was appointed referee for the Canterbury-Wairarapa match, whkh is to bo played at Lancaster Park on Saturday next. It was decided to play North Can? terbury on August 29th. The secretary suggested that the public schools tournament should be held at Lancaster Park on that date.

Tho suggestion was approved of, and it was decided , to leave the matter in the hands of Mr F. T. Evans and the eeoretary to arrange*. The Canterbury Football Association wrote asking for the use of Lancaster Park on September sth. Consideration of the matter was deferred. The secretary reported - that the actoal net receipts in connection , with the British match were £593 14s; the net expenditure £74 18e 2d, and the actual profit accruing to the New Zealand Rugby Union was £518 15s 10d. The report was considered satisfactory, and adopted.
