THE TELEGRAPH SERVICE.
SERIOUS INTERRUPTIONS.
The heavy weather has resulted in very serious interruptions in the telegraph service, and at the present time all the direct north wires, five in number, are down. The West Coast wires wero also interrupted for a time, the result being that all communication with the north was cut off. The West Coast communication was, however, restored, and such messages as got through to the North Island yesterday wero sent via Greymouth and Blenheim. The main north wires were interrupted in two places, ono between Christchurch and Waiau, and the other between Waiau and the Conway. It was found that a lone stretch of poles this side, of Waiau had fallen, but that
trouble was remedied yesterday afternoon i a special gang of men being sen* up for the purposo earlier in the day. The most serious break is on the ottter sido of Waiau, and nothing could oe done to restore the wires. However, Mr Shrimnton, chief electrician, with a party of workmen, will set out- for the scene of the interruption this morning, and it is expected that communication will be restored by to-night.
