THE TRAMWAY TIMETABLE.

SOME ALTERATIONS. The announcement made a few days ogo that some alterations Had boon effected in the tramway time-table so far a.s tho New Brighton and Burwood lines vere concerned raised expectations that a start had been made in the direction of remedying the defects iv tlie Uiblo pointed out in the column* of "The Press" recently, and of re-modelling the system on the lines indicated in that article. A careful comparison between the old and the new time-table fails to discover anything more than minor alterations.

On the New Brighton line only one time-table alteration is made in tbe outward trips. Tho 4.16 car now leaves the Square ot 4.10, and the time occupied on the journey is reduced from L'G to 23 minutes. Only one alteration io made with tlie inward trips, the 4.45 car being substituted by one leaving at. 4.35, which, however, only stops to _>et down passengers between Park road and the Square, and which makes the trio in '26 minutes, instead of 27, reaching the Square at 5.4 instead of 5.12.

On the Richmond and Burwood line, the only change made in the outward trips is that tho 8.17 p.m. car for Burton's cornor loaves now at y.lo and arrives at the corner at 5.34. tho trip time being 19 minutes. «.-> against 20 minutes previously. Tho bulk of the alterations relate to ilie inward trips on the Richmond and Burwood line, the effect being to reduce by one to three minutes tho time- o<-c-up ; e«_l on the. journey in. Tlie times of arrival in the Square remain unaltered, with one exception, but the oars start 0..c, two, or three minutes later, tiio difference being made up in most cases between the Beach or Brooklyn and Burwood.

1 lit* sect ion between Stanmore road and the Square is almost entirely unaffected by the alterations. On tho Burwood line, the 1.49 from Brooklyn, which now leaves at 1.50, readies Stanmore road at 2.18 instead of 2.19, but arrives in tho Squaro at tiio former time, 2.25, thus making tlie trip a minute longer. Tlie 8.38 p.m. from Buxton's corner, which replaces the 8.41, arrives at Stanmore road «t 8.51 instead of 8.55, and tho Square* at 8.57 instead of 9.1, a reduction in time of one minute. On tho New Brighton line a car leaving tho Square at 4.10 is substituted for one at 4.10, and arrives at Stanmore road at 4.10 instead of 4.23. Tliere is also an inward car leaving Stanmore road at 4.58 in place of the one at 5.5. and arriving in the Square at 5.4 instead of 5.12, as formerly.

There is one matter connected with the Square-Stanmore road section which those responsible for the timetable should take into consideration, and that is the question of including m the tablo book a complete and independent list of the trips made. over this section. The section is, perhaps, the busiest one on tho wholo system, no fewer than 20(5 in and out trios being mado daily. At present these trips aro arranged under three different heads, 4G under New Brighton, 00 under Burwood, and 100 under Linwood. Each section appears in a different part of the time-table and a large amount of perplexity is involved-, especially on the part of strangers to the city, as well as local residents, in keeping track of the different trips. Were these three independent sections to be amalgamated and included in tho time-table under tho heading "Square-Stanmore road," a great deal of confusion and inconvenience which at present exists would bo removed, and the publication would become moro useful and comprehensible.
