CANTERBURY TIMBER YARDS' EMPLOYEES' DISPUTE.
The Arbitration Court has filed its award in the dispute between the Canterbury (Christchuoh district) Coal and Timber "Yards' Union and the employers. The award provides that tho hours for carter* employed in timber and coal y>iids shall" bo 4G.V hours per week. evehiM'.A of stable attendance. Overtime (to drivers of one horse), Is ljd per hour for the first two hours, Is 3d nftonvrird , ;; drivers of two horses Is 3d and Is Gd respectively. Overtime for others than carters, time and a quarter for the first two hours, time and a half afterwards and on holidays. In sawmills and factories the minimum rates of ray arc ns follows:—First class machinists Is 3d nor hour, second class Is 1 id., other workers at machines (over twenty-one years of age) Is, first sawyers Is 3d, other sawyers Is, tailers-out IOUI, first class engine drivers Is 3d, second class Is lsd, firemen and uncer-t-i floated drivers Is. Tho following are tho rates for men employed in timber ?r.d coal yards:—Head yardsmen £2 \o« I>er week, ordcrmen £2 10s, all other workers over twonty-ono years of a.c;e Is per hour, casual labourers Is ljd For carters the wages are £2 4s per week (for a single horse), and £2 8s for attending; more than one horse. Country carters £2 2s for driving and attending one horse, and 7s per day if driving, but not attending to one horse. Provision is inado for the employment of youths, under-rate workers, and for preference to unionists. In the Timnxu award 45 hours per week is provided for carters. The wnp;es for first sawyers aro Is lid per hour, and Is per hour for other sawyer?'. Ordinary yardmen . aro to bo paid £2 2s per week, and casual labourers Is per hour. Wages for carters are -C" 3s and £-2 7s per week, respectively. In other respects the two awards are similar.
