Twenty suffragists at the Westminster Police Court were bound over in sureties- of £20 each to keep the peace for one year, in default one month's imprisonment. Five were bound over in tiro sureties of £25 each to keep the peace for one year, in default three- months , imprisonment. Another one was bound over in a surety of £10 to keep the peace for six months, and one was discharged.
Lord Russell, defending one of the suffragists, contended that the women's opinions regarding the franchise were tantamount to a religious belief, en-
titling them to imprisonment as first division misdemeanants.
Defendants elected to go to prison
