H. Howe-11, and that gentleman - * report was received at the quarterly ,:aeecing of the Association held lasi ;i;ight. Mr Howell stated that, in all, 6J essays were received from nveniy-oiu boys and forty-throe girls, all oi ■.vhoin, with one exception, were pupile oi , the primary schooie, tl.o Dustrid High School, the Girls' High School or Miss Gibson's school. It was v matter lor regret that so many of the candidates did not realise what was tht exact subject set, or even the objt-ct oi the Association in promoting the competition. Many of the writers dealt witli sucli matters as kauri gum collection, bush-felling, gold and coalmining, etc. j and entirely neglected thoee local pursuits to which it was the primory object of the AfsociavA/.. to call attention. Having been w*.firmed by the President in the opinion that such essays should bo disqualifird. no fewer than forty had to be set aside on that ground alone; several hove n<. indication whatever that the writers had taken any interest in the local display, and might well have been written without going near it. lie much regretted tho necessity for that step, some of tho rejected essays "'ere of considerable merit. Of the essnys dealing with tho subject proposed, he con-side-red that of Marian Sly, a pxipil from the Addington school of only 10J years of nge, to show the most merit, and wou.ld bracket together as second, Marjorie Bain, of Miss GiK one school, and Audrey Gibson, of Adding-
ton school. As, however, tho essay of Audrey Gibson wns not wholly written in school hours, he would recommend' that the second prize- bo awanVd to Marjorio *3ain.
