INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION.
QUARTERLY MEETING
The qtmrterlv raeetine of tho Canterbury In-dustrial Association was held last night, when there were presentMessrs F. E. Jones (in the chair), \V. Vt. Charters, R. 0. Badger, J. Mackli*nn C. B. Co<ran. F. Cooper, A. W Beaven, T. Cox, W. Lane, J. Morten, and J. li. Scott. The Chairman, in his quarterly report, referred at length to the recent Industries Week, and to the opening of the Otira tunnel works. On the subject of tramway contracts he sain he was pleased to note that the cars built in Christchurch had given the Board every satisfaction, and the testimony of the 'lnte engineer, Mr Chamberlain, that they were equal to anything produced in the world, must be especially gratifying to the manufacturers as well as the workmen concerned. Ho trusted that the example, with its satisfactory results, would be followed by the Government and local bodies when requiring plant. There was a general complaint of the difficulty of getting sufficient labour in all parts of New Zealand. Unskilled men were no doubt available, but there was undoubtedly great shortage of light workers. A very large number of boys and girls could be placed immediately, who would create work for skilled and unskilled men. During the quarter a visit of insoection was made by him, accompanied by members of tho committee to the Technical College. Tho work being done seemed to be sound and satisfactory, and must bear fruit in the future or great importance to our industrial welfare. Mr R. Allan was re-elected the Association representative on the directorate of the Canterbury Hall Company.
