BISHOP NELIGAN AND NEW ZEALAND SCHOOLS.
« A PROTEST AGAINST HIS UTTERANCES. (FREaS ASSOCIATION TELEQRAIf.) AUCKLAND, July 3. In regard to tho recent utterances of Bishop Neligan in England, the latest protest comes from the Auckland district branch of tho New Zealand Educational Institute. Miss Shrewsbury, in bringing the matter forward, said that she understood from the newspapers that Bishop Neligan had stated that the name of God was not allowed to, be mentioned in the New Zealand schools. She wished to know whether this assertion had received any .contradiction from tho Institute. The President (Mr C. R. Munro) replied in the negative, and added that ho thought tho best thing to do was to treat such remarks with contempt. No one would take much notice of such assertions. Miss Shrewsbury was of opinion that the Bishop's remarks on paganism, etc., might well bo ignored, but the other matters to which she had referred seemed to imply that there was a regulation forbidding all reference to the Deity in our schools. But, in view of the present controversy in England, such an assertion might be used against the Education Act. She would challenge Bishop Neligan to substantiate his statement, for it was evident that he knew nothing about the Now Zealand Education Act, the schools, or the teachers. (Applause.) In common fairness to the Government alone, under which they worked, his statement should not pass unchallenged. She moved a resolution authorising an official denial of Bishop Neligan's assertion. Mr Murray seconded the motion. Thn motion was then put and carried unanimously.
